The following judges are interested in receiving applications for judicial internships in upcoming semesters.
Chief/Senior U.S. District Judge Catherine C. Eagles (Greensboro)
- Judge Eagles is not receiving applications for Summer 2026. However, she is interested in receiving applications for the 2026-27 academic year.
- Judge Eagles will only consider externships for-credit.
- Applications must be submitted via the school to an email to Judge Eagles' career law clerk.
- Applicants must rank in the top 10%.
U.S. District Judge David A. Bragdon (Winston-Salem)
- Judge Bragdon is interested in receiving applications for the upcoming Summer, Fall, and Spring semesters.
- The priority deadline for Summer applications is February 15. Fall and Spring applications will be received on a rolling basis.
- Applications should include a resume, writing sample, and unofficial transcript, all submitted as PDF files in a single email to Judge_Bragdon_Internships@ncmd.uscourts.gov.
- Judge Bragdon is willing to consider internships or for-credit externships.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Joi Elizabeth Peake (Winston-Salem)
- Judge Peake usually hosts 1 or 2 law student interns during the summer, and she occasionally hosts a law student intern during the academic semesters. Law student interns work closely with her law clerks and observe civil and criminal court proceedings. Judge Peake also occasionally hosts an undergraduate intern for a 3-4 week term for court observation and special projects.
- Applications are rolling, and decisions are usually finalized 3 or 4 months prior to the beginning of the internship.
- Applications should include a cover letter, resume, and writing sample.
- Applications should be submitted by mail directed to chambers (Judge Peake’s Chambers, 251 North Main Street, Suite 224, Winston-Salem, North Carolina 27101), or through the student’s law school placement office.
U.S. Magistrate Judge JoAnna Gibson McFadden (Durham)
- Judge McFadden is interested in receiving applications for both Summer and Fall.
- Summer deadline is March 1; Fall deadline is June 1.
- Materials for submission: resume, cover letter, and unofficial law school transcript. The materials should be submitted in PDF form to Judge_McFadden_Internships@ncmd.uscourts.gov.
- Special requirements: top 25% standing, moot court, or a journal.
