Attorney Admission

Applicable Local Rules:  Attorneys seeking to practice before the U.S. District Court of the Middle District of North Carolina must be an active or emeritus member of the North Carolina State Bar in good standing and must meet all the requirements of Local Rule 83.1(b) of the Local Rules of the Middle District of North Carolina.  Effective January 18, 2022, the application for admission to practice must be submitted via the applicant's updated individual PACER.gov account by selecting Attorney Admissions and E-File Registration.  For information on registering for PACER, click here.

Requirements for Admission:  There are two Options for admission:

  • Option I:  If you have never been admitted to the United States District Court in the Eastern or Western District of North Carolina, you must appear in open court in this district to take the oath. Application for admission to practice must be submitted via the applicant's updated individual PACER.gov account by selecting Attorney Admissions and E-File Registration.  Attorney admissions are scheduled throughout the year.  All attorney admissions are by appointment only, click here for a list of dates and please call the Office of the Clerk at (336) 332-6061 to schedule your appointment to be sworn. 
  • Option II: If you have been admitted to the United States District Court in the Eastern or Western District of North Carolina, you must submit your request for admission to practice via the applicant's updated individual PACER.gov account by selecting Attorney Admissions and E-File Registration.  Applicants must upload the Certificate of Admission (or Certificate of Good Standing) from the Eastern or Western District during the Attorney Admissions and E-File Registration.  Upon receipt of your application, a Certificate of Admission to practice in the Middle District of North Carolina will be mailed to you.

Filing Application for Admission: There is a fee of $199.00 for Attorney Admissions to the Middle District of North Carolina. Once the Court reviews your admission request, you will be sent an e-mail with a link requesting you to submit your payment.
