New Bankruptcy Judges Appointed

The Honorable William L. Osteen, Jr., Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina, is pleased to announce that the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit has appointed Benjamin A. Kahn and Lena M. James to the position of U.S. Bankruptcy Judge for the Middle District of North Carolina.  Mr. Kahn will succeed Judge William L. Stocks and will be stationed in Greensboro, North Carolina.  Ms. James will succeed Thomas Waldrep and will be stationed in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. 

Mr. Kahn graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and History in 1990.  He received his Juris Doctorate with Honors from the University of North Carolina School of Law at Chapel Hill in 1993.  Mr. Kahn is a member of Nexsen Pruet PLLC, and previously served as law clerk to the Honorable Jerry G. Tart.  Mr. Kahn is a Conferee of the National Bankruptcy Conference, a non-profit organization comprised of bankruptcy judges, practitioners, and law professors who assist the United States Congress with bankruptcy legislation.

Ms. James attended Swarthmore College and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature in 1992.  She received her Juris Doctorate with Honors from the University of North Carolina School of Law at Chapel Hill in 1998.  Ms. James serves as the Chief Deputy for the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Middle District of North Carolina.  She previously worked as career law clerk to Chief Bankruptcy Judge Catharine R. Aron and as an attorney at Womble, Carlyle, Sandridge & Rice. 

Mr. Kahn and Ms. James will be sworn in after completing the required background check investigation.  The Judges and staff of the District Court and the Bankruptcy Court for the Middle District offer our congratulations to Mr. Kahn and Ms. James, and we look forward to serving with them.
